“He helped me immensely when I recently had lower back pain and could barely get in and out of my car. The relief that I felt was terrific…”

Low back pain often shows up where the body is carrying more than its share. Rolfing looks at the larger pattern: pelvis, hips, ribs, breath, legs, feet, and how you stand and sit through the day.

Why the low back gets overloaded

The low back sits between the pelvis and the rib cage. If the hips are stiff, the ribs barely move with breath, or the legs are not sharing the load, the lumbar area often braces to hold things together. Desk work, driving, lifting, and old injuries can all train that habit.

Many people get temporary relief from stretching, massage, adjustments, or rest, only to have the same ache return. That usually means the body is still using the same strategy for standing, sitting, and bracing. Rolfing Structural Integration works with those relationships. Many clients report this may ease how much the low back has to do on its own.

What a session may include

Ryan may work with the hips, pelvis, legs, feet, ribs, or upper back depending on what is feeding the low-back pattern. Sessions can also include simple movement or breath awareness so a change shows up when you stand, sit, and walk, not only on the table.

The pressure should be collaborative and specific. The goal is not to force the back to let go, but to give it a reason to stop doing all the work.

What this work does not do

Rolfing is not medical care, and it is not a treatment for a disc injury, fracture, infection, or nerve damage. It does not promise to fix low back pain. For some people with recurring, non-emergency tension, it offers a practical look at posture, fascia, and how force moves through the body.

If pain is severe or sudden, follows a fall, or comes with numbness, weakness, fever, or changes in bowel or bladder control, see a doctor first.

This work may fit if you notice

  • Recurring low back tension that comes back after temporary relief.
  • An ache linked with sitting, driving, lifting, standing, or the end of the workday.
  • A sense of being braced, tilted, or compressed through the pelvis and ribs.
  • Hip, leg, or upper-back tension that travels with the low back.

Questions people ask

Can Rolfing help low back pain?

Rolfing may support some people with recurring low back tension by addressing posture, fascia, breath, hip and pelvic support, and how the body shares load. It is not medical treatment and should not replace care for serious symptoms.

Will you only work on my low back?

Usually no. Low back pain often involves the pelvis, hips, legs, feet, ribs, breath, and sometimes the neck. Ryan works with the pattern that is keeping the low back overloaded.

What if the pain runs into my leg?

Pain that travels into the buttock or leg can involve the hips, pelvis, and how the spine is supported. That overlap is described on the sciatica page. Numbness, weakness, or pain after trauma needs medical care first.

When should I see a doctor first?

Seek medical care first for sudden or severe low back pain, trauma, fever, unexplained symptoms, radiating numbness or weakness, changes in bowel or bladder control, or pain that is worsening or concerning.
