“He has amazing knowledge of the body, and how it's all put together, and can see and address the genuine places that need attention even if the pain/discomfort manifests somewhere else.”

The shoulder moves a lot, and it depends on the ribs, neck, and shoulder blade for a place to move from. When that support is missing, the shoulder often grips.

Why the shoulder gets overloaded

Reaching, desk work, driving, lifting, and old injuries can leave the shoulder blade stuck to the rib cage, or the neck doing the shoulder’s job. Pain at the top of the shoulder, the front of the joint, or between the shoulder blades often belongs to that larger pattern.

Rolfing looks at those relationships instead of only rubbing the sore spot. Neck tension, jaw clenching, and headache patterns frequently sit in the same neighborhood.

What a session may include

Ryan may work with the shoulder blade, chest, ribs, neck, arm, and sometimes the low back or pelvis if one side is hiking to hold the arm up. A simple reach or a breath can show whether the shoulder can move without the neck joining in.

Pressure is collaborative. The goal is not to crank the joint through a stretch.

What this work does not do

Rolfing is not medical care for a rotator cuff tear, dislocation, fracture, or infection. It does not rebuild a torn tendon. If the shoulder is hot, swollen, unstable, or suddenly weak after an injury, see a doctor before bodywork.

For recurring strain tied to posture and how the arm is carried, Rolfing may be a practical complement to other care. It is not a promise that the pain will be gone.

This work may fit if you notice

  • Shoulder tension that returns after massage or stretching.
  • Pain linked with desk work, driving, lifting, or sleeping on one side.
  • Neck, jaw, or upper-back tension that shows up with the shoulder.
  • A shoulder that feels hiked, rounded forward, or stuck.

Questions people ask

Can Rolfing help shoulder pain?

Rolfing may support some people with recurring shoulder strain by working with the shoulder blade, ribs, neck, chest, and the way the arm is carried. It is not medical treatment for tears, dislocation, or joint disease.

Will you only work on the shoulder?

Usually no. Shoulder pain often involves the neck, ribs, chest, upper back, and sometimes the pelvis. Ryan works with the pattern that is keeping the shoulder overloaded.

What if I also have neck pain or jaw tension?

Neck pain, jaw tension, and shoulder strain often travel together. The neck and jaw pages describe that overlap. A session can include more than one of them when they are part of the same pattern.

When should I see a doctor first?

Seek medical care first for sudden shoulder pain after an injury, inability to lift the arm, visible deformity, significant swelling, fever, or numbness and weakness that is new or worsening.
